The Simplest Way To Drop Your Cold Sores Easily

By Guest Author On October 18, 2010 Under Skin Care

Cold sores, most commonly found around the mouth, are small blisters that may be spread to other parts of the body. Fever blisters are another common name for them. Spreading easily, they are considered highly contagious, and are caused by HSV, better known as the herpes simplex virus. A cure cannot be affected because HSV is a virus, but treatment is available. Estimations of total infection of the population may be as high as 80%.

HSV comes in two forms. HSV-1 is known best to be the cause of fever blisters. HSV-2 is more commonly known to cause genital herpes infections. Though each type primarily has its own zone, either one can be spread to any part of the body through skin sores, contact with the mouth or genitalia, or in touching mucous membranes infected.

There may be a few variations, but there are typically five stages for an outbreak. Before blisters form and show, when there is burning and irritation below the skin is known as the ‘tingle’ stage. When small blisters form visibly, the blister stage has started.

The ulcer stage occurs when the blisters break and weep, discharging a clear to yellowish-clear fluid. The ulcers start to scab, bringing the sufferer into the crusting stage. The final stage, also known as the final healing stage, is when the healing starts, and typically lasts from a couple of days to a couple of weeks.

Treatments such as over the counter and prescription medications can help ease pain and itch, without much evidence of shortening an outbreak. Some successful home remedies have been found to ease the initial ‘tingle’ stage, such as moist teabags and periodic applications of an ice pack.

Practicing safe methods, such as keeping hands clean and not touching other parts of the body after touching a sore is important through the entire outbreak, especially once ulcers form. Blindness has even occurred after scarring of the corneas when cold sores have been spread to the eyes. Kissing and oral sex, or sex if blisters are present in the genital area, should be refrained from during this time as well to prevent passing on herpes simplex.
