Body Care Issues When Dealing With Winter

By Guest Author On January 21, 2011 Under Skin Care

There are few places in the world where dealing with winter weather is not a problem. Those people have other issues, but yours is your reaction to the cold and changing weather that your skin has to contend with. It’s the back and forth of warm and cold that dries you out.

Lips: There are several things you can do to keep your lips out of winter trouble, but licking them isn’t one of them. Simply put, don’t do it.

Licking your lips causes more problems than it solves. The real solution is lip balm. Lip balm seals in moisture while protecting your lips from the in and out of life in winter time.

Face: You should be using a moisturizer all the time, but in case you don’t, the rule is doubly true in winter. You should probably also consult with a professional who can tell you what exactly your skin type needs in terms of product in order to stay moist.

Hands: Quick factoid: Did you know that nowhere on your body is your skin thinner than on your hands? It’s true. And that is why is so important to protect that skin in winter.

Of course, using a good moisturize is essential, but there are things you could be doing beyond just that. For example, if you need to wear thick wool gloves to stay warm, put on a pair of cotton gloves underneath to prevent itching. Also, doff the wet gloves altogether.

Feet: The wetter the socks, the worse they are for your dry, dry skin. Simply get out of wet socks as soon as possible. Also, if you are in the habit of wearing boots, your feet may need a little extra care in the form of exfoliation to get off the dead skin and let the moisturizer do its job down there.

A few extra pointers you should keep in mind. Use a humidifier if you also use a heater in the winter. Heaters are notorious for evaporating what little water there is in the air. The humidifier is a great way to replace it. Also, it is vital that you wear sunscreen whenever you leave the house, especially in winter. Just because you can’t see the sun, doesn’t mean it isn’t there.
